Recognised as an official unit in 1997, TS Centaur provides the opportunity for the youth from Maleny and surrounds to acquire skills in leadership and teamwork by taking part in sailing, power boating, bushwalking, rifle shooting, drum band, parade activities, organised camps with other units and many other activities.

The Australian Naval Cadets is a voluntary youth organisation, open to young people between 12 1/2 and 19 years of age and sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. Theres are some 82 Units across the country with between 30 and 80 cadets.

Our Unit TS CENTAUR, commemorates the Australian Hospital Ship CENTAUR (AHS 47) which was sunk off Moreton Island in 1943 by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine, resulting in the loss of 268 lives.

The RAN supplies free uniforms and sailing craft, assists with their maintenance and provides some further financial and logistical support. The local community is responsible for the acquisition of a Unit Headquarters and helping to fund other equipment not provided by the Navy. Parents are expected to support the cadets through membership of the Unit Committee and attending fund raising activities.
